Green Powder Smoothies – Decadent drinks no one can resist

During the school year I make a Greens Powder smoothie for my daughters every morning. It’s a great “On-the-Go” breakfast that provides them with essential vitamins and minerals, protein, and depending on what I put in, good fats. It’s also the best way to set them up for a day of learning, providing sustained energy and clarity of mind. They arrive at school ready to focus and learn and I don’t have to worry about the slump that often happens with a high sugar breakfast.

During summer vacations, smoothies take on more of the role of snacks as leisurely mornings allow for a more traditional breakfast. We’ll typically enjoy scrambled eggs with a variety of fresh vegetables, smoked salmon or other protein, and of course a heaping serving of fresh fruits! Berries are the favorite in my family, along with exotic fruits such as papaya and mango. It’s a tasty and super healthy way to start are day.

Until recently, my five year old didn’t necessarily care for the more “green” smoothies, so I always made her a smoothie with a chocolate Greens Powder. Cacao is a phenomenal antioxidant which also contains Omega 6 fatty acids, excellent for a healthy heart and brain. Raw cacao is of course the best so I make sure to use a Greens Powder that does not compromise on the quality of ingredients. One of the new favorites is a “chocolate Peanut Butter Cup” smoothie… It’s extremely simple to make and truly irresistible.

Chocolate Peanut butter Cup Green Smoothie:

1 heaping Tbsp raw peanut butter
2 scoops Amazing Grass Kidz Chocolate Superfood
8 oz almond milk or for a even more decadent drink, use chocolate almond milk!

Blend all ingredients until smooth, sit back and enjoy!

I make all of my nut butters from home as, unfortunately, most nuts today are GMO and there is nothing good about GMO foods as far as I am concerned. In fact, studies have shown a strong tie between GMO nuts in particular and an increase in Breast Cancer.

Making your own nut butters is super simple, absolutely delicious and the best way to make sure your ingredients are wholesome and of the best quality. For peanut butter, place 1 lb raw peanuts in a food processor and blend until desired consistency. Voila! If you like a crunchy peanut butter, reserve a handful of peanuts and toss them in when your nut butter is at the consistency you like.

For an added boost of goodness, add 4 tbsp of raw chia seeds. Chia seeds are a “superfood” long enjoyed by the Aztec. They are an excellent source of protein with 3g per Tbsp, Omega 3 fatty acids and fiber. And if you add them to your smoothie they will swell up like little boba balls adding a fun texture to your drink.

PB&J Green Smoothie:

2 heaping Tbsp raw peanut putter
1/2 cup mixed organic frozen berries
2 scoops greens powder
8oz Almond milk

Blend all ingredients until smooth and enjoy this fabulous smoothie that tastes just like the american favorite

These Greens Powder smoothies will fool anyone as you do not taste the greens at all. Try these recipes out and let me know how your family enjoyed them. Cheers!

Greens Powder Review – Amazing Grass Green Superfood

When it comes to picking one of my favorite greens powder, this one is definitely at the top of the list!

I love everything about this supplement — the taste, the texture, the ease with which it dissolves in water, and the quality of the ingredients.

This is one of the powders on the market with one of the highest percentage of organic ingredients.  Sadly today a lot of our food supply is greatly devoid of much nutritious value as our farmlands have been greatly overused and the soil in which many fruits and vegetables are grown is greatly depleted of minerals and vitamins.  And if the soil does not contain these vital nutrients, the food grown in that soil will not contain them either.  Add to that the heavy use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and much of what ends up on your plate, or in your supplements, does not contain much of anything beneficial to you.

Not the case with Amazing Grass as the company is dedicated to creating the best Organic Green SuperFoods, made exclusively from the finest ingredients on the face of the earth! Ingredients are grown on a family run farm in Kansas and every effort is made to ensure the quality of the ingredients is premium.  The vegetables, fruits and herbs are harvested at the peak and cold pressed or dehydrated in a way that ensures nutrients remain intact and strong.

Most days, I have a glass of water when I first wake up, and within a half hour I have a glass of Amazing Grass simply in water or coconut water. Better than coffee by a long shot to start your day.

The entire line of Amazing Grass products is regularly stocked in my kitchen, and this one is one of my “go-to greens” for sure!

Greens Powder Review – Macro Greens Supergreens

Macro Greens’ Miracle Greens is the first greens powder supplement I ever tried and I was convinced right away of it’s benefits.

This is a complete greens powder, which contains 38 different ingredients, including Spirulina and Chlorella, two of nature’s most wonderful superfoods.

Although the licit of ingredients is quite complete, not many are listed as “certified organic”.  Personally, I am willing to pay a little extra to get a high percentage of certified organic ingredients.  Now that I’ve been using a Greens Powder supplement for several years, I’ve done extensive research and favor those with a higher organicc content.

Macro Greens claims that this blend does not contains any common allergens or other harsh ingredients. This formula does not include wheat grass, alfalfa, oat, kamut, rye, no soil based organisms, kelp, bee pollen, garlic, onion, MSG, GMO’s, yeast, egg, artificial coloring, alcohol, preservatives, flavoring, salt, starch, maltodextrin, wheat , gluten, corn, stabilizers, pesticides, herbicides or any dairy animal products.  However, one thing to be aware of is that it does contain horsetail which SHOULD NOT BE CONSUMED by those with circulatory problems such as Raynaud’s or heart issues.  So if you suffer from either of these conditions, you may want to consider using another brand instead.

As with any food product or supplement, check the list of ingredients and try it out to see if it suits your needs.

When it comes to benefit, I felt a difference in my energy and clarity of mind right away, and was immediately convinced of the benefits of supplementing even a diet already rich in fruits and vegetables with a greens powder supplement.  It’s a great way to start the day, and a much more effective “pick-me up” than coffee by far!

This powder works best in a smoothie as it does not dissolve as well as others in plain water.  Add a little almond milk, a handful of fruit, blend and enjoy!

The one thing I don’t care for much about this particular greens powder is the strong Stevia taste.  Many greens powders are sweetened with stevia as it is an all natural plant based sweetener with zero calories.  There are many grades of stevia, some with a strong taste, other you barely notice.  In the case of Macro Greens, it’s the taste that stands out, and the reason I continued my search for the perfect greens powder.  Many people I know love this supplement as the taste is a non-issue for them.. I just happen to be particularly sensitive to it.

All in all this, I feel this is a decent choice for a complete, well balanced supplement, though it is no longer my favorite.

Green Smoothie: Cinnamon & Nutmeg laced Broccoli and Kale smoothie

Cinnamon and nutmeg makes this superfood rich smoothie good for your heart, and easy on your taste buds.  In addition to providing a rich and warm flavor to this smoothie, cinnamon, which contains a polyphenol compound, balances your blood sugar by enhancing the function of insulin.  Nutmeg, a warming spice, helps to maintain low blood pressure by drawing blood away from your heart to your skin.

Yields 12 ounces

6-8 leaves kale
1 medium stem broccoli, with florets
2 medium carrots
1/2 inch ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg

Sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg on broccoli and kale before placing in your juicer.  Alternate firm and soft vegetables and process in your juicer.
Serve in a chilled glass, stir and enjoy!

Superfood Infused Recipe: Smoked Salmon & Zucchini Quiche

I make quiche at least once a week and my family loves it. This superfoods rich meal is great freshly made for dinner, and makes a nutritious lunch the next day that can be eaten cold or warmed up. This salmon and zucchini quiche is one of my four year old daughter’s favorite dish.

serves 8

preparation: 20 minutes

cooking time: 30-35 minutes

  • 1 quiche crust
    4 cloves garlic, minced
    2 Tbsp olive oil
    4 medium zucchinis
    6 oz. smoked salmon
    1 cup grated goat cheddar
    5 eggs
    4 oz heavy cream
    8 oz milk
    1/4 tsp nutmeg
5-6 leaves fresh sage, thinly sliced
    salt & pepper to taste

preheat oven to 450.

Roll out crust and place in 9 inch pie pan.
Cut zucchini in 4 length-wise,  then cut into 1/2 inch cubes.
In a skillet heat olive oil.  Add garlic and zucchini.  Cook until just tender.
Remove from skillet and arrange on bottom of quiche crust.
Cut salmon into 1/2 inch pieces.  Arrange with zucchini.
Add shredded goat cheese.

In a mixing bowl beat eggs slightly.  Add cream and milk and whisk until blended.  Add nutmeg, sage, salt and pepper.  Pour mixture over salmon and zucchini.

Bake at 450 for 30-35 minutes or until the filling is set and golden brown and the crust is golden.  Cool on wire rack for 10 minutes before serving.  This quiche pairs well with a simple green salad, or another superfood — a spinach salad.  Enjoy!

Greens powder – Getting your kids to beg for more!

Imagine my delight every morning when I hear my four year old say: “Mommy, may I have a chocolate green smoothie please”.  I gives me peace of mind knowing I’m sending her off to school with a breakfast that puts her in the best “learning” mode possible.  No sugar laced food that will cause her energy to crash at just about the time she needs to be alert.  What’s my secret?  Amazing Grass Kidz Superfood in chocolate flavor. I love the entire line of Amazing Grass Products, but this one makes ensuring that my children get all the vitamins they need a synch!

Now I am not suggesting that a greens smoothie replaces the need for fresh greens, fruits and other vitamin rich vegetables, but I know how picky some kids can be, and with an Amazing Grass Chocolate smoothie, you know you’ve taken care of at least a few servings a day.

I am a lucky mom in that my kids love to eat a variety of superfoods.  Fruits and vegetables have been part of their daily diet since they first started eating.  Whatever veggies I was cooking for the family, I’d set a small portion to the side, without herbs or spices, and place it in the blender for an all natural wholesome meal.  Squash, zucchini, spinach… you name it they ate it.  And what better dessert than fresh blueberries, one of the best brain food on earth!

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so make sure you serve your children (and yourself for that matter), one that is chock full of superfoods, and super tasty at the same time!

Chocolaty chocolate green smoothie
1/2 banana
1/2 cup greek* yogurt – plain or vanilla
1 cup chocolate almond milk
1/2 cup plain almond milk
2 scoops Amazing Grass Kidz Superfood – Chocolate Flavor
*Greek yogurt is an excellent source of protein providing a whopping 21 grams per 1 cup serving, making this smoothie a well balanced meal.

Blend all ingredients until well mixed and serve in your child’s favorite cup!  Just be careful, you might be tempted to keep it all for you!!

If you want to give this smoothie a little tropical twist, replace the 1/2 cup plain almond milk with coconut milk.  Yum!

Greens Powder – Choosing the one that’s right for you.

Once you have chosen to add a Greens Powder supplement to your diet you are faced with a seemingly daunting decision:  how do I choose the right one?  Whether you’ve searched online or at your local health food store, you’ve probably found that there is a plethora of choices on the market.  So how do you know which brand to pick?

Well the simple answer to that question is that you have to find the one that fits YOU best.  There isn’t one brand that is the best for everyone, as we all have different needs and different criteria that go into making that decision.

Here are some things to consider when choosing a Greens Powder supplement:

•    Ingredients
•    Taste
•    Price

As you will find, not all green powders are created equal.  In general, green superfood powders provide a concentrated form of disease fighting fruits, vegetables, microalgae, probiotics and sea vegetables.  Many greens powders also contain a variety of grasses.  The real benefits of these grasses is highly debated.  If you’ve found a shot of wheat grass from your local health food store to give you a boost, then you’ll probably seek a supplement with various grasses.

The real superfoods are dark green vegetables such as spinach, romaine lettuce, black kale, parsley, celery, arugula, and so on, so make sure the brand you chose contains plenty of those.  Many brands are made from a high percentage of organic fruits and vegetables, but not all.  I find that this effects the potency of the supplement.  Many brands also include fruits known for their disease fighting ability.  The composition of your product will directly impact the taste.

Generally speaking, the better a superfood tastes,  the lower it’s nutritional density. Why is this? Because most of our food today contains sugar — everything from ketchup to salad dressings, most soups and yogurts, and our taste buds are accustomed to that taste.  The most nutritionally dense superfoods– such as chlorella, spirulina, broccoli sprouts, spinach, kale,  etc. — often have a very strong, earthy taste that many people dislike.

I personally love that earthy taste and tend to choose greens powder supplements that are not very sweet.  If you are used to sugary beverages, including fruit juices, even the “no sugar added” variety, I recommend that you start with a sweetened variety of greens powder.  Those may be sweetened with berries, stevia, agave nectar or raw honey.  If you don’t like the way it tastes, you won’t drink it, so choose one that you enjoy.  You can then gradually switch to a non-sweetened variety, as your taste buds adjust.

Price varies tremendously from one powder to another.  Don’t automatically believe that the most expensive brand is the best one.  Price will, however, be influenced by the ingredients and their grade, so know that an all organic product without many “fillers” will have a higher price point.  Take some time to  research prices at your local health food store and online.  Most manufacturers have a website where you can purchase their products, but they don’t always offer the best price.

If you are shopping online, however, and you choose not to purchase directly from the manufacturer, make sure that you choose a trusted source.  Green superfood have a limited shelf life.  You’ll want to make sure you are getting a fresh batch to get the greatest benefit.

I encourage you to try a few different brands and find out which one you like best.  You may find, as I have, that there are several.  You can find some of my favorite brands in the “shop” section of this site.  Please share your favorites with me.

Here’s to your health!

Greens Powder smoothies – How I finally lost my baby weight!

I discovered the power of using a greens powder drink mix in my quest for a secret weapon for losing my “baby fat”.

I had my third  child at 40 and by the time  she turned one and half, I still carried around an extra 10 lbs of “baby fat”.   Needless to say I was devastated and desperate for a “cure”: something to help me off the plateau I had hit.

I hadn’t had a problem losing the weight the first two times, so I was perplexed and annoyed.  Now I suspect that age played a role, but I wasn’t ready to accept my weight as my new norm.  I’d actually expected the opposite.  I’d figure that with three, I’d be running around so much I’d lose the weight within a few months.  But though I was running around I wasn’t exercising very much.  I just didn’t have the energy or time.

That in and of itself was frustrating, as I am a bit of an exercise junky: I run, hike, ski, scuba dive, rock climb, climb fabric… and we’ve always been active as a family.  That is until this third baby.  Somehow the motivation was harder, the energy lacking, and there just seemed to be too much to juggle.

I am also goal oriented and when a friend asked me to train with her for a half marathon, I thought that would be my ticket to a new, slender me.  Getting back into running felt great and I started seeing and feeling a small difference, but not the melt-away I was expecting.  The 5 or so hours a week I had for myself were great stress relief, and I was happy to have gotten back into a healthy routine.   But the weight still wasn’t coming off fast enough.

When I shared my frustration with my running partner she asked: “What are you eating?”  I was forced to think honestly about my diet, and quite frankly I had plenty of room for improvement.  And I had to admit that since I was running regularly, I somehow gave myself carte blanche to eat anything I felt like.

I searched the Internet for a secret weapon of sorts and stumbled upon greens powder supplements.  I discovered that a greens powder smoothie makes a great breakfast before a run: it gives me all I need for sustained energy, yet isn’t too heavy.

The greens powder drinks and the regular exercise brought me new energy, better moods, and better focus.  For a few weeks, I decided to be extremely strict about my diet and started replacing my carbs packed snacks with greens powder smoothies.  It wasn’t long before I started craving my smoothies and not cookies or other “treats”.  I’d stopped obsessing about my weight and before I knew it I was back into my pre-pregnancy clothes.

I credit my greens powder drinks for getting me there.  Since starting to use a greens powder supplement, I feel generally much happier, and what I can never get enough of is the incredible energy I feel all day… even when my little darling keeps me up a good chunk of the night!
